My husband and I were living in Jerusalem when we get engaged. We knew most of our friends there would not be able to come to our wedding in the States, but their presence during our ceremony was very important to us.  I asked our friends to bring pieces of fabric to our engagement party in Jerusalem, which I spent the next two months piecing together into this very colorful chuppah, which became a symbol of the first community we shared.
